Is Whey Protein The Best Bodybuilding Protein?

They say more than 80% of building muscle is eating – and they aren’t wrong. If you get your diet even slightly wrong, you can end up with no results at all. Sucks, but that’s just how it is. Protein is crucial to building muscle – and the better the protein, the better the results. Which begs the question, is whey the best bodybuilding protein?

Yes – but, let me clarify.

Whey protein has the highest biological value of any protein, even the old Rocky favorite – raw egg. That means when you ingest whey protein, your body finds it easy to use to build muscle. Other proteins aren’t quite so absorbent.

That’s just one reason why whey protein is the best bodybuilding protein. There’s another… it’s speed of digestion. Separate from it’s overall usability, whey protein is a very fast acting protein. This makes it the ideal protein to be taken during breakfast and after training (even during, by some people) which is why it’s so hugely popular. Plus, the sheer convenience beats making every meal a proper meal.

Where whey really isn’t much use is during times of fasting – such as sleep. During this time you could do with taking in a slow digesting protein such as casein (found in milk) which will give your muscles something lasting to stop catabolism occurring.

Keep in mind though, just because whey protein is the best bodybuilding protein, that doesn’t mean you should take in whey and nothing else. Whole foods which are totally (or nearly totally) unprocessed are where the real, natural nutrients are – and that is a good, healthy habit to get into. Make use of and rely on whey protein as the excellent supplement it is, by all means – just don’t build your entire diet on it.
