Question:
Howdy. I’ve done some reading on the subject of whey protein carb content and see conflicting reports and wanted your opinion on it. Some people seem to think that taking carbs with protein helps to raise insulin levels which helps the muscles take in more protein so it’s good. Others say buy the purest whey protein you can which is low in carbs or you’ll get fat. I’m confused. What should I do?
Answer:
Hey. Naturally, when you buy whey protein you are buying it for the whey protein – so the higher the purity, the better. Lower purity whey is cheaper (concentrate) and tends to contain higher amounts of carbs and other ingredients.
It’s true that insulin does help nutrients to be taken in by the muscles more, but that’s no reason to purposely buy lower quality higher carb whey for that effect – that’s a waste if you can afford better, as you can get the same effect by taking in a spoon of sugar with high quality whey or mixing with a fruit drink or something.
As for whey protein carb content making you fat, that’s very unlikely. And it certainly won’t happen if you know when to take whey protein. And it definitely won’t happen if you are keeping a close tab on the amount of overall calories you are taking in.
