Question: Whey Protein Gave Me An Upset Stomach!

Question:

Hi. I took whey protein and ended up with an upset stomach. I want to try again but I think it’s the brand. What do you recommend?

Jase

Answer:

Unfortunately Jase, you’ve given me barely any information to help you with. You haven’t given me the brand you tried, so I can’t ascertain whether or not it’s the lactose content or a brand known to cause gastric issues, or what dosage you were taking or what you were taking it with.

Working in the dark I’d say try the same brand again but a lower dose, and see if you get ‘issues’. Could it also be that you’ve mixed it with milk? Some people can’t digest milk, and adding whey into the mix just makes matters worse. You could try it with water.

As a rule of thumb, it’s usually the lactose which causes whey to give people stomach issues. Whey protein concentrate tends to cause most problems as it’s the lowest purity whey, meaning it contains the most lactose. Whey protein isolate and hydrolyzed whey protein tend to contain so little lactose they are fine even for the most lactose intolerant people.

I hope this helps.

P.S. Feel free to write back with more details.
